Excellent book about Geoffrey Wellum joining the Royal Air Force, struggling to become a qualified pilot, and finally being successful by joining a spitfire squadron in time for the Battle of Britain. He tells of several of his actions against the Luftwaffe fighters and bombers; and one against very hazardous weather conditions.

It is the story of an idealistic schoolboy who couldn't believe his luck when the RAF agreed to take him on as a "pupil pilot" at the minimum age of seventeen and a half in 1939. Geoffrey Wellum was born on 4 August 1921, an only child, in Walthamstow, Essex, to Percy and Edith Wellum. His father, who had served at Gallipoli during WW1, ran an off-licence. Wellum was educated at Forest School, Snaresbrook, where he captained the school cricket team.

2020-02-13 · Geoffrey Wellum was born in Walthamstow, and educated at Forest School, Snaresbrook. Aged seventeen, he joined the RAF on a short-service commission in August 1939 and served with 92 Squadron throughout the Battle of Britain. In March 1942 he went to 65 Squadron at Debden as a Flight Commander and from there to Malta later that year. I have read his book First light many times and feel I got to know him. I spend summers near to Million and always thought I would get to meet him, just by chance as I did not want to bother him, now I wish I had. I shall pay my respects at the church next summer.
It then shifts to his participation in the Battle of Britain and to his participation in Operation Pedestal , flying planes to Malta off an aircraft carrier.

I'm rather an optimist by nature but even I didn't expect to be quite so taken by this book. Geoffrey Wellum joined the RAF in 1939 when he was just seventeen years old and served with 92 Squadron throughout the Battle of Britain. In 1942 he went to 65 Squadron at Debden as a Flight Commander and from there to Malta later that year.
Thrust into combat almost immediately, Wellum found himself flying several sorties a day, caught up in terrifying dogfights with German Me 109s. Published more than fifty years afterwards, "First Light" is Geoffrey Wellum's gripping memoir of his experiences as a fighter pilot during WWII. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
I shall pay my respects at the church next summer. Now again he can fly. RIP Geoffrey Wellum Sq Ldr First Light: Original Edition (Penguin World War II Collection) by Geoffrey Wellum and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at AbeBooks.co.uk.

For the sheer thrill of learning to fly look no further than this book. Geoffrey Wellum takes you into the cockpit with him and you share the joy, pain, and anxieties of mastering the intricacies of Tiger Moths, Harvards and Spitfires.
