The spit is also a wonderful place to walk on the beach and if you can get to the Light House Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge offers trails along cliff areas and a walk along the beach of the spit to a lighthouse that is about 5 miles away one way.so plan your time and watch for tides. Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge - Dungeness Spit Surf was higher than I'd seen it before. As others have mentioned, be sure to check the tide chart before you come out if you plan on hiking out to the lighthouse (link below). Park at a the north side of the Dungeness Spit Recreation Area, in the Refuge parking lot. There is a kiosk at the Refuge where you can pay an entrance fee ($3) and check the Tide Table.

2020-07-31 · Dungeness Spit was created roughly 10,000 years ago when melting glaciers left thick deposits of sand and gravel along the coastline here. Extending over 5 miles into the Straight of Juan de Fuca, the New Dungeness Lighthouse (no there never was an old one) has been operating on its tip since 1857. At the end of the spit you will find the Dungeness Lighthouse, built in 1857. Reaching the lighthouse makes the beach hike 11-miles round-trip.
